Especially at this time of the year, we hear the phrase: “It’s a miracle.” The phrase’s referents, however, are multiple and mixed. Are we talking about the wonders of modern medicine or a mayonnaise? The first moon missions with less computer processing power than is in a smart phone or a laundry detergent? The game winning score with no seconds left on the game clock or about lamp oil and out-of-wedlock babies born amongst the animals sheltered inside against the winter cold?
